Review: Long Shot (2019)

Hey everybody!

I feel like I’ve been saying this a lot lately but it’s been a while. Life’s been keeping me busy. That’s why I’m even happier to be back with a new review!

Going into this movie, I really had no expectations, none at all. Me enjoying this movie very much was a long shot (ahah I’m hilarious I know). But genuinely, I had no idea what to think of this movie whatsoever.

It stars Seth Rogen as Fred Flarsky, an idealistic journalist who does not mince his words. A liberal writing articles such as “Why The Two-Party System Can Suck A Dick“. Charlize Theron stars as Charlotte Field, the U.S. Secretary of State, whom the media describes as elegant and charming.

Usually I’m not one for rom-coms but this one got me.

For starters, it was so much funnier than I thought it would be. I was laughing so hard. Ridiculous at times but never too much, just the right amount of “oh god, did that just happen“.

It had funny lines but that didn’t take away from the subject matter. I understand it’s “just a rom-com” but the way it was combined with political satire was really decent. I think that’s why I enjoyed this particular rom-com. Moreover, parodies of figures like Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Fox News CEO Rupert Murdoch and Canadian Prime Minister/Internet Boyfriend Justin Trudeau were part of this beautiful blend.

What I also really enjoyed was the chemistry between Seth and Charlize. Nothing seemed forced. And their performances were great. You could expect Seth to be hilarious but who knew Charlize could match him like this! It looked like they were genuinely having fun, which made their roles and emotions that much more believable.

Honestly I’m not sure what else to say. This movie is not a must-see but if you’re looking for a good laugh, I would definitely recommend this!

Letterboxd rating: 4 out of 5
